What does this measure?

The number of arrests processed in municipalities across Westchester County, categorized by whether the top charge at arraignment is classified as violent or nonviolent.

Why is this important?

Understanding where arrests are concentrated - and the nature of those arrests - helps policymakers identify where interventions, resources and prevention strategies may have the greatest impact. It also highlights whether enforcement patterns are driven by more serious offenses or lower-level activity.

How is Westchester County performing?

In 2025, arrests were largely nonviolent and the highest volume occurred in the large municipalities, with Yonkers accounting for the largest share by a wide margin, followed by Mount Vernon, White Plains, New Rochelle and Peekskill. Across all jurisdictions, nonviolent arrests made up most cases, while violent arrests represented a smaller but still meaningful portion. This suggests that arrest volume was largely driven by lower-level offenses, and focusing resources and interventions in high-volume courts could yield the greatest impact countywide.

Notes about the data

Data comes from the New York State Unified Court System's Office of Court Administration Statistics Act (OCA-STAT) extract, compiled by the Division of Technology & Court Research (DoTCR), and includes all individuals arraigned in criminal court from 2021-2025. Arrests are classified as violent or non-violent based on the top charge at arraignment using a standardized methodology.
